In Metro Detroit, there is a significant gap in the availability of skilled trades training for young people. Many students graduate from high school without the necessary skills to enter the workforce, leading to high unemployment rates and a lack of economic opportunities. Additionally, many young people in the area have a lot of free time after school and during the summer, which often leads to unproductive activities and disengagement from their communities. To address these issues, we propose the development of a program for young people that introduces them to skilled trades, financial literacy, and provides a productive use of out-of-school time.
In Metro Detroit, unemployment rates for young people are higher than the national average, and many of these youth and adolescents lack the skills, education, and experience needed to secure gainful employment in the trades industry or to enter into apprenticeship programs. Additionally, many young people in the area struggle with academic achievement and lack access to productive activities outside of school. Our program aims to address both issues by providing young people with the skills, mentorship, and support needed to succeed in the trades industry and beyond.
The outlook for skilled trades for young people in Metro Detroit appears to be improving in recent years, as more young people are starting to see the value and opportunities in pursuing careers in the skilled trades. However, there are still some challenges to overcome, such as a lack of awareness and misconceptions about these careers.
One of the positive trends is the growing number of apprenticeship programs and vocational training opportunities in the Detroit area. Many of these programs offer hands-on experience and on-the-job training in skilled trades occupations such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). These programs can provide young people with a pathway to a rewarding and stable career, often with competitive pay and benefits.
The employment outlook for skilled trades in Metro Detroit over the next decade is expected to be positive, although there may be some variability among different occupations within the skilled trades. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metropolitan area had a total employment of 2,205,510 in May 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Of those, around 18.1% were employed in the Construction and Extraction occupation group, which includes skilled trades such as carpenters, electricians, and plumbers. The mean hourly wage for this group was $28.90, and the mean annual wage was $60,120.
The STAT Program is an innovative program that aims to address the challenges facing young people in Metro Detroit. By introducing young people to the skilled trades industry, financial literacy, and providing a productive use of out-of-school time, we believe this program will have a positive impact on the participants' lives and the community as a whole and make a real difference in the lives of the participants of the program.
Overall, the STAT Program will provide an opportunity for young people in Metro Detroit to learn valuable skills, become engaged in their communities, and access new economic opportunities.
